On a stair, since handrail must be between 34″ and 38″, the handrail and the top of the guard can be one and the same. In commercial railing applications, the IBC requires a minimum height of 42″. On stairs, once there is a 30″ drop, a handrail will be required and placed between 34″ and 38″ above the nosing. Guards shall be located along open-sided walking surfaces, including mezzanines, equipment platforms, stairs, ramps and landings that are located more than 30 inches above the floor or grade below. Required guards shall be not less than 42 inches high above the adjacent walking surfaces, adjacent fixed seating or the line connecting the leading edges of the treads.
Opening limitations
Required guards shall not have openings which allow passage of a sphere 4 inches in diameter from the walking surface to the required guard height.
